What happens when the behaviour of an infectious agent remains not only unpredictable but also completely untameable? Can a virus be redesigned to mimic an ideal model?

Through tracing the intracellular developmental cycle of the T7 bacteriophage, Sophia Roosth invites us into an MIT laboratory in disarray. In the inaugural April meeting, the reading group will explore the conceptual parameters of synthetic biology, where issues of a predictable nature, anxieties and hopes

about “intelligent design,” and Judeo-Christian accounts of creating life, entangle to produce a series of emergent encounters.

If you would like to join us, please RSVP to ziha2281@uni.sydney.edu.au sometime during the coming week. The link above contains a PDF download for Chapters 1 & 2 (a short selection due to the limited amount of time).

WHEN: Monday 30 April, 4-6pm.

LOCATION: RC Mills Building, Rm.148, the University of Sydney
